PJ Library Provides Best in Jewish Educational Materials

It is hard to describe your feelings as a parent when you hear your three-year old begging you to play Modeh Ani  and Eli Eli on the CD player or to read the Hannukah story again . . . in June.
Of course, any well-meaning parent can find quality Jewish books and music with a little effort.  But our family has had a little help.  We have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate in the PJ Library program since our girls were babies. Each month, both of our children receive a package in the mail with Jewish-themed materials and a parental activity guide from the PJ Library. These wonderful gifts have helped us engage our children in conversations about Jewish holidays and Jewish values.

Richmond and Israel Teens Bond

This summer, 37 Richmond and Israeli teens bonded during separate rewarding Richmond and Israel P2K Summer Experiences.
First, a group of eight teens from Richmond joined up with 9 Israeli teens in Israel for 2 weeks.  They toured the country together, including Emek Hefer, volunteered in the community, learned about Israel, Judaism and more, and had a great time. The Richmond teens were hosted by their peers from Emek Hefer and stayed with their families, experiencing first-hand Israeli life.
Next, came the Richmond P2K Teen Experience. The ten teens from Richmond who went to Israel last summer served as hosts for 10 Israeli teens that hosted them last year in Israel.  All explored the Richmond area, did volunteer work and learned about the local Jewish community. Community Shlicha Dana Ragosin staffed both.

An Hour a Week Will Make a Difference

Can you donate an hour a week to make a difference in the life a child? The Richmond Jewish Coalition for Literacy (RJCL) is looking for volunteers for the 2008-2009 school year at Swansboro Elementary School.
This year marks the RJCL's 10-year anniversary of volunteering at Swansboro. Many of the mentors have been doing this for years and have built strong, meaningful relationships with the students they mentor.
Last year RJCL fielded about 35 mentors and worked approximately 1000 volunteer hours at Swansboro Elementary School.

This past July, UJC/Federation-supported JAFI and the French-Jewish organization AMI chartered three flights to bring 450 new French immigrants to Israel. The influx of French immigrants to Israel has been steady in the past few years: nearly 20,000 Jews have made aliyah since 2000 and the numbers are expected to remain steady at up to 3,000 olim annually.

Tomorrow Begins Today with your legacy gift to Federation. Remember Federation. Live Generously. It can do a world of good forever.
Federation's trusted role in building community Federation is the central address of the organized Jewish community. We bring community together to create collaborative partnerships in planning and meeting essential human service demands required by a myriad of constituencies. We meet those needs by raising sufficient funds to sustain and enrich Jewish life and Jewish lives everyday here at home, throughout the Diaspora and in Israel. Federation works to reach out and engage people to become active participants in communal life and to teach them the importance of tzedakah and philanthropy.
